Homes and commercial properties across Sydney can add a little more privacy and a touch of class to any room with obscure glazing. With a pane of frosted glass that’s cut-to-measure and designed to your exact specifications, you can reduce visibility to the level that suits you.

Obscure glazing continues to grow in popularity across Sydney. That’s why at Willoughby Glass, in addition to the standard bathroom mirrors, premium shower screens and glass cut to size, we also supply and install a range of patterned and obscure glass. Frosted, translucent or obscured glass allows light to enter while ensuring privacy is added to anywhere it’s desired.

When it comes to designs, your options are almost limitless. Frosted glass can be crafted through acid etching or texturing during the manufacturing process, to create the impression of a rough overly and a surface that adds a level of depth that regular glass can’t achieve.

Below you'll find a selection of the varieties we offer, together with the available thicknesses for each type.

What's obscure glass?

This is a type of glass with any form of distortion either by colour, textures, or patterns. It allows light through while blocking your view. The obscurity can vary from minor distortion to completely blocking visibility.

What's the difference between frosted glass and obscure glass?

Frosted glass is one type of obscure glass. This is where a distorted image can be viewed from the other side of the glass, identifiable by a white opaque frosting. Obscure glass, in general, allows large amounts of light to pass through whereas an opaque surface doesn’t.

Types of obscure glass

There’s acid-etched obscure glass. This gives an opaque effect that works well for shower doors and workspace partitions. The glass offers partial or full privacy depending on the intensity of opaqueness.

Ribbed/reeded obscure glass gives you a clean design aesthetic. Thin and low-profile ribbing passes light through while heavily obscuring vision. Conversely, thicker bands of reeded glass create a three-dimensional effect with more light and less obscurity.

Can obscure glass be tempered?

Yes. You can have the obscure glass tempered to ensure it’s reinforced with added strength and minimise shattering. Compared to regular glass, toughened obscure glass is far more challenging to break.
