What To Do When Glass Has Broken?

There are 3 main types of glass and depending what type of glass has shattered, it will determine how dangerous and how urgently you need a repair. We still recommend glass repairs to be done as soon as possible as broken glass compromises your security and is a safety hazard.

As soon as glass breaks, to prevent anyone getting hurt, you should block off the surrounding area including where the shards have fallen until our glass specialist can safely remove and dispose of the broken glass.

Ordinary Float Glass

Breakage of ordinary float glass is highly dangerous because it breaks in large knife-like shards and requires professional assistance from a glass specialist. Immediate, same day replacement is recommended for ordinary float glass as it needs to be cut out of the frame.

Toughened Glass

Toughened or tempered glass breaks into thousands of little pieces, less dangerous than ordinary glass. Sometimes the glass pieces will stay intact and hold but usually it will shatter to the ground. Broken toughened glass is less hazardous than ordinary glass, however, it should still be repaired immediately.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is one of the safer glasses when broken as it will stay intact and hold when it cracks. However, ordinary glass can be confused with laminated glass as it also breaks in shards, sometimes momentarily holding together, and then falling apart. Therefore caution should be exercised regardless and repairs organised as soon as possible.

Willoughby Glass complies with the conditions of Australian Standard AS1288 in our replacement of broken glass to ensure safety for you and your family. This glass standard is a uniform standard mandating the type and thickness of glass replacement based on building design requirements.

How Dangerous is
Broken Glass?

Broken glass can be extremely dangerous and can cause critical serious injury. Glass shards can cut or puncture the skin, creating deep wounds potentially resulting in severed ligaments, tendons or arteries. Handling broken glass yourself without knowledge and experience can be very hazardous and is not recommended. You can trust the glass specialists team from Willoughby Glass with safe and reliable glass repairs in Sydney.

FAQs

How long does glass replacement take?

Depending on the size of the glass door or window, the time to replace the glass will vary. Generally for glass door repairs, it will take around 60 mins and for glass windows it will take approximately 45 mins. Submit an enquiry with us or call us for immediate repairs and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What’s the cost of window glass replacement?

Glass window and door repairs in Sydney will cost over $200 at least, depending on whether you need a single or double paned window. Our prices also depend on your location, the size and the type of glass you require. Call us down to inspect your broken window and we will provide a free, no obligation quote.

Can you repair chips or scratches in the glass?

We do not repair chipped or scratched glass, we only offer full glass replacement services. Attempting to repair scratched glass by buffing it can result in distorted, cloudy glass that is hard to see through therefore we recommend getting a new one.

Can I collect my glass from a local branch?

Yes you can collect your glass from our Sydney shop at 19/1-7 Short Street, Chatswood, NSW, 2067 or we can safely deliver your glass to your location.

Why would it be impossible to install the same glass as the damaged one in some cases?

Some glass types that have been previously used may no longer meet the requirement of building standards. In accordance with the Australian Standard AS1288 building code, we have to install glass that is of the acceptable safety standard for your property design. This standard determines the type and thickness of the glass required for your residential or commercial property.
